Frequently Asked Questions
Are all your letters hand painted?
Yes they are! Each and every one is custom made to order and painted with great care to the highest standard. Of course with each one being painted by hand they are not 'perfect' and minor variations will occur but this gives each of them a unique quality that only hand painted lettering can achieve.
Do you use real gold leaf?
I certainly do. Only real gold leaf gives the luxurious and beautiful finish that my pieces require so there's no fake or imitation gold. Most pieces are made using 23ct gold leaf but other slight variations, such as red gold or moon gold, are also used. The same applies to the copper and variegated zinc leaf used in some of my designs.
Will copper leaf tarnish with age?
No it won't as all pieces are 'backed-up' once complete which means they are protected from exposure to the air and to any possible damage by a layer of enamel paint. Note: this is on the rear of each piece and protected in turn by the frame.
How long does it take to make a gilded letter?
There are 8 or 9 individual process in making a gilded letter so it usually takes around 4 or 5 days to complete a piece from start to finish for a small piece, longer for more complex pieces.
How do you achieve the mirrored finish with gold leaf?
This is done using a traditional method known as reverse glass water gilding. It is a very delicate and involved process but the result is definitely worth it!
Can you make anything else?
Again the answer is yes. I can literally make any letter, word, number or combination that you can imagine and if you have a letter form you particularly like I am able to use that style. If you have a bespoke piece in mind please get in touch and we can discuss your requirements.
How do you package finished pieces?
I will post your hand painted letter with great care using quality packing materials designed for the safe delivery of art. I am very aware that glass is a fragile material and so needs very careful packaging.
How long will delivery take?
Delivery is currently for the UK only and all items are sent by Royal Mail first class post.
